Final Projects

Power:

This is my artifact in response to the subject of power. This was not my first reaction to the word power but after many days of racking my brains with the idea of the uniform but Nick said it sounded a little complicated i think that this idea is about 100 times more complicated and not sure really why I went for it. the premise of the film is to challenge the viewer to look close up at items in their every day life that has the power to change what we do and how we appear to others. This piece isn’t out of my comfort zone as such but I think the time restrictions on me were un-comfortable enough.

I carefully selected the images and tried to frame the shots like photographs I thought this would help to convey the amount of shots of the same thing and I liked the way I could make the cuts seem invisible. The film was ment to be anti narrative piece because I felt that trying to get a narrative over in 3mins would be to difficult. but in doing the shots and the order I put them in, a narrative has been generated.

I had a few negative issues with the artifact, one was the sound, I wanted the sound to be the natural sound of the item but in a few of the shots there is some background noise. also one of the shoe shots if out of focus.

I think if I was going to make the film again I would tighten up the cuts a bit more and add a few more objects to film just to make it a bit more interesting for the viewer something to do with getting ready to be seen by civilisation and the subjects peers. I also think I could put a beat to it and get the noises to keep to the beat but that could be a totally different film.

Perceptions:

before: My initial idea for this film was totally different and the new concept was kind of rushed so i thought that the film come across rushed, I wasn’t very confident at all.

after: Speaking with Paul Smith and listening what he took from the film I felt better and felt that the film “had legs” and I thought about how I could even develop the idea for a final project

Spectacle:

These our my final photos under the title spectacle.
I hope that the photos reflect my research in that I was trying to go through the stages of production that results in a photograph that is staged like photographer like Gregory Crewdson would. The way i think spactacle is achieved in these photos is the way they are produced, staged and that the outcome they represent tey almost create another spectacular reality that has no boundaries. The photos took a long time to get the lighting right the positioning of the subject the setting on the camera to make the light most effective.
I think my favourite photo is the one with the subject trying to hold the door closed with a bright light coming underneath, like i have said in my spectacle page I am trying to get the audience to fill in the gaps that the photo leaves that a film would fill in. I think my least favourite photo is the one under the bridge it is directly influenced by Crewdson his photo where there is a child looking up at a bridge with a light coming directly down from the bridge the photo is obviously missing a subject but i think the photo still works in it self. If I had more time to do this project I would spend more time on the production of the shot to make the spectacle more apparent adding more to the mis-en scene I think would achieve this.
I chose to put some of my development shots into the piece for two reasons:
1: I was lacking shots
2: I wanted to try and convey the amount of work that setting a shots up like this takes maybe i could have taken shots from behind the camera and the actual setting up the shots. maybe that helps the piece convey it’s spectacle something that Crewdson isn’t affraid to do he doesnt mind having film crews filming him setting up his shots it almost builds the spectacle of the final photo.
From Photographers like Smith, Kaoru and Crewdson I think my photos have a crude link to there work thats what I hope when the photos are viewed
Perceptions:
Before: I thought that this would be idea would be fairly easily achievable and that the shots would take minimal effort to even think of.
After: I had realised that the setting up the shots was a very long process and even trying to think of a decent scene to shoot was hard enough.

This is my final artifact for memory in a perfect world it would be a instillation and the the viewer could choose what sound they wanted to hear then the photographs would be around the room the images are taken some from present day and some from when I was younger the idea was to show progression and change that everyone’s house and family go through there are no pictures of my dad in the piece because he left when I was young and doesn’t really figure in my day to day life in Frampton (although I do see him regularly) there atre also images of places that are mentioned in the voice over. The voice over was something I wanted to do to add another dimension to the photos and then I thought about it being an installation. I didnt edit the sound at all because I wanted to sound raw and I thought that it is kind of a Richard Billingham style but with sound. The one thing that I have a problem with in the sound is the buzzing I think it distracts from the actual voice but it gives it a more raw feeling I guess. The downside to doing this project was that I could only shoot over one weekend so gettin my mum and her boyfriend to get used to the camera took one day then I could get it out (the camera) and they would be to phased. The piece is multi format because I wanted to experiment with something I had never done before but something I could proceed with in the future (not the project but the style). I had some issues with the sound namely the buzzing on the marantz this can be a bit distracting but if I could work the damn thing then it would have been better the idea for the sound came from Johnathan Lee’s lecture and tha idea that the work you create can be shown in a space of its own and this space can be manipulated and even become part of the piece  itself.

Responses

  1. Your film was intended to be anti-narrative but I found the edit created natural links to the process of getting ready, then going out. The piece could have been improved if the actions were deliberately linked or completely random, rather than a mix of the two. The images did tell the intended story, as suggested in your research, the power of change before we go out. Your reflective comments should help you move on and improve your future projects. Overall I found the film had many elements contained within it that were original and offered a freshness of approach to the given assignment.
